Movie Filmed in WNY Won’t Be Released Until April 2021

The coronavirus-related closures have shuttered movie theatres across the country, and aside from a few first-run films released to streaming platforms, movie studios are rescheduling release dates for their Summer 2020 blockbusters -- including one filmed in Western New York.

"A Quiet Place 2" has a new release date finally, after COVID-19 scrapped its originally scheduled release on March 20, reports WKBW. 

The film, largely shot in locations across Western New York, will now be released on April 23, 2021.

It's far from the only major motion picture to be delayed; "Tenet," the highly-anticipated film from Christopher Nolan and Disney's "Mulan" are the latest to be shelved for future release.

And since movie studios already have films scheduled for release throughout 2021, many 2020 films will be pushed to 2022 and beyond.

New release dates announced include "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," now on April 8, 2022. "Under the Boardwalk" on July 22, 2022, and "The Tiger's Apprentice" on Feb. 10, 2023.

So what does this mean for Oscar hopes for directors like John Krasinski and Christopher Nolan, and the all-star casts of their films?

The New York Times reports the Academy of Arts and Motion Pictures has already pushed back the Oscars to April 2021, from its originally scheduled date in February.

And, because of the pandemic, the Academy is extending the eligibility window for best picture consideration to February 28 instead of December 31, to make up for theatre closings.
