Police officials announced that Michael Burham who was arrested for raping and killing a woman in Jamestown, New York, and then carjacking a couple and forcing them to drive him to South Carolina has escaped from jail.

Police say people in the area should be vigilant, lock their doors, and contact local police if they see anything.

Burham was being held in the Warren County Jail on a $1 million bond.
He was arrested in South Carolina after a multi-state manhunt and is facing charges in New York, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.
Burham was arrested in May after a tip came in from a homeowner in South Carolina.

The FBI said in a statement that "Burham was arrested near United Drive and Halfway Creek Road in the Huger community near the Berkeley-Charleston county line. He nor any first responders were injured. Authorities credit an observant resident for spotting Burham near his residence in rural Berkeley County and calling 911. Responding teams used K-9s to track Burham."
