Winter is here and snow is on the way to the Empire State.


Starting in Western New York, lake effect snow coming off Lake Erie is expected to bring some significant snow over the weekend. A Winter Storm Watch is in place starting on Saturday and going through Monday and some areas of Western New York could get over 7 inches of snow.

In Northern New York, there is a Winter Storm Warning in effect Friday night through Saturday afternoon for Hamilton and Northern Warren counties, while there is a Winter Weather advisory in place for the rest of the area. Snow totals could be anywhere between 3 to 7 inches with almost 10 inches of snow possible in areas under the Winter Storm Warning.

Downstate near New York City, the biggest issue will be wind and rain. There should be no snow but there is a Flood watch for much of down state where they could get several inches of rain over the weekend.

Most of New York State is also a High Wind warning or advisory over the next 24-48 hours.
