As the return of school nears, there's help for Buffalo parents who may be struggling with getting their children the school supplies they need. Students in Western New York will head back to class on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, and things will be different than 2020 (at least for now). Kids will be back in class and on campus, which means they'll need things like book bags, pencils, paper, notebooks and other supplies they may not have used as much during virtual learning. The good news is that there are four upcoming school supply giveaways to help parents and students in need.

D&A Events, Outwest Records and Kalah Bishop present the Back-to-School Community Day Black Party, sponsored by Councilmember Darius Pridgen. The event will feature free food, free haircuts, free hairstyles, free school supplies, a bounce house, music and more. It will take place from 4 to 7 pm on N. Parade Ave in MLK Jr. Park.

Saturday, August 28, 2021
The Third Annual Johnnie B Wiley Backpack Giveaway will take place on Saturday, August 28, at Johnnie B Wiley Stadium, located at 1100 Jefferson Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14208, on the Jefferson and Dodge side, from 9 am to 1 pm. Every student in grades kindergarten through 12 will receive one free backpack with school supplies. Students MUST be present in order to receive a bookbag. Masks must be worn by everyone, including children. In addition to backpacks for the kids, there will be 500 Tops Friendly Markets gift cards provided to families. Conway the Machine from Griselda made that possible with a generous donation through his The Conway Cares Foundation.

Macedonia Baptist Church, located at 237 East North Street in Buffalo and lead by Rev. Julian A. Cook, Senior Pastor, is hosting Mac Fest 2021. The event will feature a backpack and school supply giveaway. In addition, there will be covid screenings, teeth cleanings, haircuts, ice cream, music, bounce houses a petting zoo, face painting, local vendors, community organizations and food trucks. At 11:30 am there will be an outdoor worship service. Mac Fest 2021 will take place on Sunday, August 29, from 1 to 5 pm. Council Member Nowakowski and Legislator Howard Johnson will host their Second Annual Backpack Giveaway & School Supplies Drive on September 4. There will be music, fun for the kids, a bike helmet giveaways, a bike raffle, food, and a backpack giveaway. If you would like to receive a backpack for your child(ren), please pre-register here (pre-registration does not guarantee you will receive a backpack). There is a limit of one backpack per family if the child is not present at the event. If each child is present, a maximum of four backpacks will be provided. Supplies will be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis.
