Deer vs car accidents happen all the time across New York State and sometimes the accidents can be deadly not only for the deer but for the driver of the vehicle.

According to the New York State Department of Transportation, there are anywhere between 50,000 and 60,000 accidents involving deer and vehicles each year.

The greatest risk for deer vs car accidents happens in the two hours before sunrise and after sunset each day. Plus most deer/car accidents in New York State happen between October and December each year.

Here are some things you can do to avoid hitting deer with your vehicle.

• Use caution when driving at dawn or dusk and scan roads and roadsides ahead;
• Reduce your speed at night and use high beams when possible
• Slow down when approaching deer standing near the roadside, as they may suddenly bolt into the road;
• Deer often travel in pairs or groups, so if a deer is spotted crossing the road, slow down and be alert that others may follow;
• Briefly use flashers or a headlight signal to warn approaching drivers when deer or moose are spotted in or near the highway
