Could Can And Bottle Deposit Increase In New York?

Could you soon be paying more for a bottle and can deposit in New York State?

Advocates who want an increase to the amount of deposit in the "Returnable Container Act" are asking New York Governor Kathy Hochl to pass a new law that would increase the amount of deposit from 5 cents to 10 cents.

The current "Bottle Bill" was signed into law in 1982 and required a 5-cent deposit to be collected for every bottle and cans sold in New York excluding certain bottles like wine and hard liquor bottles.

The current proposed bill "Senate Bill S237B" would increase that deposit from 5 cents to 10 cents. This proposed bill would also include wine bottles, cider bottles and cans, liquor, distilled spirit coolers, and cider to the definition of "beverage".

Senate Bill S237B is currently in committee and would have to first be brought to the Senate floor to be voted on before heading to the Governor to be signed into law.

The proposed "Bottle Bill" could become law as soon as January 1st, 2025 if it get passed through the New York Senate and House.
