We've got a ton of ways to find out what the weather is going to be.  But even with all those methods it's not 100% certain.  These animals might be able to help.

Here in New York, we can go from an 80 degree day to a 40 degree day in just a couple hours.  In one part of town, you need your sunglasses because it's so sunny.  In the other part of town they're getting ready to bail out their basements because of a crazy storm that just passed through.

Weather forecasters go their entire careers trying to be as accurate about the weather as they can be.  But maybe they just need to ask the animals.

There are plenty of people who believe that the wooly bear caterpillars can actually tell you what the winter is going to look like.  All you have to do is look at them.

If you've ever seen a wooly bear caterpillar you know that they're an orange color with black on either end of their bodies.  The theory is that amount of black or orange on their body will tell you how mild or harsh you can expect the winter to be.

So if it has more black on its body, the winter will be more harsh.  The more orange you see, the milder.  But what's cool about that graphic is that it even shows when it might be harsh.  The orange is more toward the head?  The winter will begin mild but then end harshly.  If it's more toward the back end, look out at the end of winter.

Can it though?

According to the National Weather Service...it's a myth.

"The woolly bear caterpillar's coloring is based on how long caterpillar has been feeding, its age, and species.  The better the growing season is the bigger it will grow.  This results in narrower red-orange bands in its middle.  Thus, the width of the banding is an indicator of the current or past season's growth rather than an indicator of the severity of the upcoming winter." - National Weather Service
