A $250 fine and up to 15 days in jail is the maximum penalty in Williamsville this winter – all for not shoveling your sidewalks.

The law was approved Monday night at the Village board meeting. The Village of Williamsville plows the sidewalks during the Winter, but private plowing companies leave snow piled up on the sidewalks and the fines allow the Village to recoup some of the money for coming out and re-cleaning.

It is ultimately, up to the homeowners to be responsible for their areas to be cleared.

According to WGRZ:

allows the village to fine or jail someone if they do not keep the sidewalks clear of snow or ice. The Village plows all of the sidewalks in Williamsville, but it's still the property owner's responsibility to make sure they stay clear.

Fines are not uncommon for failing to keep your sidewalks cleared in WNY, as East Aurora and Amherst both have penalties.
