When They Develop A Vaccine For COVID-19, Who Should Get It First?
To say that people around the world have been sidelined due to coronavirus would be a major understatement. They're working on a vaccine now, but who should get it first?
There are two people in the world these days. There are the people who think they have all the answers, and then people who will admit that they have no answers at all to any of this. Do we stay home all the time? Do we wear masks all the time? What do we do about the kids?
Now, there's a new one that has come up. When a vaccine is developed, who should be the first to get it?
Even if a vaccine is declared safe for use by the end of the year, let's be honest, it's not like they're going to have an unending amount of it. There will be batches at first.
So who gets the first batch? Should it be kids first? Should it be the elderly? How about first responders who are on the front lines trying to fight this thing?
According to WKBW, there is one expert that thinks he has an idea where it might go.
Dr. Francis Collins is the director of the National Institutes of Health. He says that not everyone will like the outcome of the first decision.
“There will be many people who feel that they should have been at the top of the list.” - Dr. Francis Collins
Now, let's add in the fact that the rest of the world needs this vaccine also. Unless the world is safe from the vaccine, it will always be a threat to travel too. So how does that work? If the vaccine is created in the U.S., do the citizens of the U.S. get the first doses of it? What about countries that are poor?
The CDC’s suggestion:
- First vaccinate 12 million of the most critical health, national security and other essential workers.
- Next would be 110 million people at high risk from the coronavirus -- those over 65 who live in long-term care facilities, or those of any age who are in poor health -- or who also are deemed essential workers.
- The general population would come later.
It's going to be a huge debate for months to come. But someone is going to have to be first in line. Who do YOU think it should be?
