The Town of Amherst issued a press release detailing steps to take to protect yourself from West Nile:

Use Insect Repellent. Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent on exposed skin when you go outdoors.

Wear Long Sleeves and Pants. Mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent will give you extra protection.

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours. Mosquitoes bite from dusk to dawn, so take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing during evening and early morning hours.

Install or Repair Screens. Keep mosquitoes from entering your home.

Drain Standing Water. Empty standing water from containers near your home. Keep children’s wading pools empty and on their sides when not in use to protect your kids.
