A deadly fire broke out on Weiss Street early Monday morning, killing a woman and her young daughter.

The home was aflame, in the city’s Kaisertown neighborhood, around 1:40 a.m. when Buffalo firefighters arrived on scene. When they got to the home, the stairs had been burned out, and the team of firefighters discovered that there were no working smoke detectors.

According to a report from WIVB Channel 4’s Evan Anstey, the two victims were found next to a window in a second-floor bedroom. The mother was only 31, and her daughter also perished in the fire, estimated by family members to be about two-and-a-half years old.

The woman has been identified by family members as Stephanie Schultz and her daughter, Stella.

Members of the Schultz family remember Stephanie as a giver, someone who would give the shirt off her back to anyone. She loved her daughter and her husband more than anything else in the world.

And while Stella was just over the age of 2, she had so much personality. Stella was smart, strong-willed, and determined, and you could usually find her smiling and laughing. Stella knew just how to spread happiness to every life she touched.

While working to contain the fire, four firefighters were hurt and taken to ECMC for treatment, but they have all been released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but there has been no signs that would indicate suspicions.
