New Yorkers can finally cross the border into Canada, but the price has gone up. It's no surprise since everything (except paychecks) has been going up. The increase is specific to the Western New York area. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission confirmed to WKBW that tolls are now $1 more to cross the border.

As of August 1, 2022, the tolls to cross certain bridges into Canada are:

Autos(USD$)(CAD$)
Cash$5.00$6.50
E-ZPass$5.00N/A
ExpressPass$5.00$6.50
Nexus/Toll$5.00$6.50
In Tow per Axle$5.00$6.50

These three bridges are affected by the increase:

Walking or riding a bike across any of the three bridges will cost $1 in both U.S. and Canadian currency.

The Buffalo-Niagara area has the most crossings in New York State. Last year there were more than 1.5 million crossings in the area. Considering that crossings were down due to COVID-19 restrictions, it's still a significant number of crossings. The increase in fees will be used by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission.

Established to finance, construct and operate the Rainbow Bridge, the Commission proved sufficiently efficient and effective to be granted responsibilities for the Whirlpool Rapids (Lower) and Lewiston-Queenston Bridges.

At our own expense, we build and maintain facilities for Customs and Immigration functions on both sides of the border. The NFBC is self-supportive, largely through user fees (tolls) and private-sector tenant leases. NFBC conducts international commercial financial transactions and issues federal (U.S.) tax-exempt bonds.

High tolls in New York State are nothing new, that's for sure.
