The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is Happening This Year – With Some Changes
This year has been different on so many levels. Certain holidays are being celebrated differently. But one tradition that we love is set to come back with some changes.
When you think Halloween, you probably think trick or treating, parties, and A Charlie Brown's "Great Pumpkin" special. Trick or treating was discouraged, parties were a no-no, and the Charlie Brown special wasn't shown on network TV.
When it comes to Thanksgiving, we think of family dinners, football, The Turkey Trot, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. They're encouraging people to have smaller family dinners, football is still good, the Turkey Trot will be done virtually, and The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is back...but there will be some changes.
According to USA Today, there will be a lot that will be the same about the parade. We will still see most of the same balloons that we are used to. The floats will be back. Even Santa Claus is going to make his way to the parade. But there will be some things that will be different.
With COVID still on the rise, the people who arrange the parade have decided to err on the side of caution. Normally the parade sees about 3.5 million people along the curbs of the parade route. Obviously, they don't want that many people to gather so they will not have spectators at all. You will still be able to watch the parade, but it will have to be from the comfort of your own home.
"For New Yorkers who typically see it live and in person, this change for them is that they are going to experience it the same way the rest of the country experiences it. But I think for the rest of the country, it’s not going to be too different." -- Susan Tercero, executive producer of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
You will also see the people in the parade wearing masks. Something that we have become used to seeing this year.
Another change is that there will not be anyone under the age of 18 allowed, which means that the high school marching bands will not be there this year.
The 94th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will air from 9 a.m. to noon ET Thursday, Nov. 26, on NBC.
