In today’s Things That Make You Go Hmm news: The new animated Jetsons movie, based on the popular Hanna-Barbera TV series, has brought one of Sausage Party’s co-directors, Conrad Vernon, on board to “develop” and probably also to direct the movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this more than likely means that the movie, which Warner Bros. had been looking to adapt into a live-action version since the late 1990s, is going to be animated, which is probably a good idea. I mean, the live-action Flintstones was good, but remember the Scooby-Doo movies? Vernon’s presence on the project hints that the studio is now looking towards a computer animation take on the characters.

Vernon is an animation veteran who’s also had directing credits on Dreamworks’ Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Madagascar 3. Sausage Party made headlines last year as Seth Rogen’s raunchy comedy about anthropomorphic food items, but Vernon also brought plenty of experience with Hollywood animated movies.

Sausage Party made almost $100 million at the U.S. box office on a budget of $19 million. Who knows, if this Jetsons movie gets big enough, it could usher in a new Space Age. We’re certainly overdue for another Moon landing.
