A tragic accident happened in Lewiston on Saturday morning when a 16-year-old died in a sledding accident.

What you may not know is the 16-year-old died a hero.

According to WKBW, 16-year-old Renee Hill went sledding with her three-year-old cousin at Clyde L. Burmaster Park this past Saturday morning. On the way down the slope, they hit a tree. Renee was rushed to the hospital was passed away on the way.

It turns out Hill saved her cousin in the accident, according to her mom, Alexis Kraft.

“She had went down the hill. She had my 3-year-old nephew on with her. She saw the tree coming. Her first instinct was to put her foot down and flip the sled so my nephew wouldn't get hurt. She hit the tree. Her heart stopped on the way to the hospital,” Kraft said.

Renee's three-year-old cousin was treated for injuries but was released from the hospital on Saturday.

"Don't take one minute for granted with your babies. Tell them you love them. Every minute. Every chance you get," Kraft said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Renee's family. I can't even imagine what they're going though.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help.
