1.  The "rule of three".  Each room should have at least three light sources.  It gets rid of shadows and makes a room look deeper.

2.  Don't hang art everywhere.  Spaces feel bigger if you leave some walls open.

3.  Create the illusion of tall ceilings.  Get extra-long curtains that hang from up ABOVE your windows.
