School District Sends Cafeteria Leftovers Home For Students

You might have seen this story on social media yesterday; people are talking about a great idea coming out of a school district in Indiana, where leftover cafeteria food is sent home in take-out containers for hungry students.

Elkhart Community Schools provides students with breakfast and lunch at school, but students might go without enough food on weekends.

The creative solution of packaging up cafeteria leftovers for needy students solves multiple issues; feeding hungry students and rescuing unused food.

FOX28 reports South Bend, IN-based non-profit group Cultivate secures the leftover food, and provides backpacks filled with frozen meals for students.

“Mostly, we rescue food that’s been made but never served by catering companies, large food service businesses, like the school system," said Jim Conklin, of Cultivate. "You don't always think of a school."
