As a radio personality, I'm always yapping and often find my voice a bit hoarse and raspy. Sam Smith is always singing which also puts plenty of stress on the vocal cords. He does not want to disappoint his fans that have purchased tickets to his upcoming shows, with a raspy, hoarse voice as he has now, suffered a vocal cord hemorrhage, and needs surgery.  Sorry fans.

According to ABC News, Sam has said:

a doctor advised he receive suspension microlaryngoscopy surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery and be back in six to eight weeks.

Sam is disappointed that he'll not make many performances and he'll even miss the Billboard Music Awards.

Sam is staying positive as he took to Instagram to tell his fans:

“By doing this in 8 weeks time I’m gonna be able to sing like never before so it’s worth it. I am so sorry to all. Dreading the next month thou, I can’t speak for THREE WEEKS after the op.”

So get well soon Sam and do what it takes to keep your golden voice sounding the best it can be.
