The Buffalo Sabres have been one of the worst-performing teams of the past decade in the NHL. In fact, they’ve been likely the worst team since 2012.

The Sabres have not made the playoffs in 11 seasons and have gone through multiple rebuilds. The good news is they played well in the last three months of the season, with their young core stepping up.

Some of those young guys are now playing in the AHL Playoffs for the Rochester Americans, who if you haven’t heard, are advancing to the final eight after upsetting the Utica Comets in five games (3-2) on Thursday.

The Amerks defeated the Comets 4-2, with West Seneca native Sean Malone scoring the eventual game-winning goal.

The Amerks have been on a Cinderella run in the playoffs. They’re led by the likes of Arttu Ruostalainen, JJ Peterka, Jack Quinn, Peyton Krebs, Oskari Laaksonen, Mattias Samuelsson, and Casey Fitzgerald.

Outside if Ruostalainen and maybe Laaksonen, all of those players are part of the Sabres future plans. Quinn and Peterka were the Amerks best offensive players and two future top-two line players in Buffalo.

The City of Buffalo is rooting on the Amerks and we love how they made fun of Utica after eliminating the Comets.

Probably because Utica said Rochester was “adorable” back in late March.

The Amerks didn’t hold back.

Rochester will now play Laval in the North Division Final. Their guaranteed home game will be on Wednesday in game three. It’s a best of five.

Go Amerks!
