Rick Jeanneret Will Soon Retire After 51 Years With The Buffalo Sabres

If you grew up in Buffalo, Western New York or Southern Ontario, then you likely at least know of Rick Jeanneret.

For Sabres fans, young and old, Jeanneret is an icon. He's what made many people fall in love with the Buffalo Sabres and hockey in general. His calls are engrained in the minds of Buffalonians forever.

Unfortunately, the 2021-2022 season will be Jeanneret's last as the Sabres play-by-play man.

The Sabres announced this morning that Jeanneret will be retiring after this upcoming season.

Jeannerert has been with the Sabres for 51 years, which is one year short of the Sabres entire existence in Buffalo.

Jeanneret has called fewer games in recent years, letting Dan Dunleavy step in as play-by-play announcer for games, so this news isn't unexpected.

Jeanneret literally shaped my hockey love growing up in Buffalo. His calls were so memorable that they've become pop-culture in the City of Buffalo.

The "May Day" call is his most famous and one of the most famous calls in NHL history. When forward Brad May went through hall-of-fame defenseman Ray Bourque and scored to give the Sabres a sweep of the Boston Bruins in 1993.

The Jason Pominville "Scary Good" overtime winner to send the Sabres past the Ottawa Senators in 2006.

The Chris Drury "Who Else?!" goal to send the Sabres past the New York Rangers in 2007.

The Derek Plante "Are You Ready Legion of Doom?!' goal to give the Sabres a game 7 overtime winner in 1997.

Then, you have iconic calls for the likes of Dominik Hasek, Pat LaFontaine, Ryan Miller, Gilbert Perreault and so many other Sabres legends. How about, "Stuuuuuuu Barnes!"
