When I was growing up my dad used to always point the fact that the Thanksgiving comedy, Planes, Trains and Automobiles had scenes filmed right here in Western New York.

The comedy that stars John Candy and Steve Martin celebrated the 32-year anniversary of its release on Monday.

But where exactly in WNY were scenes filmed?

According to WGRZ, Batavia, South Dayton and other sections in Erie and Cattaraugus were locations for scenes for the famous film.

The filmmakers, including the great director John Hughes, needed a place that looked like the nation's Midwest but snowier.

Locals were called upon to be extras and paid $50 for a 10-hour day, including time and a half for overtime.

Remember the scenes that took place in Stubbville, Kansas? That was actually shot in South Dayton in Cattaraugus County, including when the train famously broke down.

The famous "you're going the wrong way!" scene? That was filmed on the 219, somewhere between Buffalo and Springville.

One of my favorite scenes is when Candy and Martin were pulled over in their burnt car. That scene had to be delayed because of a snow squall that tore through the set.

Maybe the best story was when John Candy asked to help make pizza at Pizza Partner's in Batavia at 2:30 a.m. when he was hungry. He kept the crew there until 4:30 a.m.

Here's one of the best scenes from Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
