Police Are Cracking Down On This For The Next Few Days

The week-long speed enforcement initiative known as "Speed Week" runs now through August 7.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee’s Speed Awareness Week is a time to remind drivers to “Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine.”

According to a Facebook post from the Erie County Sheriff's Office, "Deputies are intensifying enforcement of posted speed limits throughout Erie County and targeting roadways where data indicates there was a crash related to speed. Deputies will stop and ticket anyone caught speeding, especially on roads in neighborhoods, and secondary where most of the speed-related crashes occur."

Did you know:

• Nationally, 17% of all speeding-related traffic fatalities occurred on local roads -- where the posted speed limits were 55 miles per hour or under.
• A crash on a road with a speed limit of 65 mph or greater is more than twice as likely to result in a fatality compared to a crash on a road with a speed limit of 45 or 50 mph.
• Crashes are nearly five times as likely as a crash on a road with a speed limit of 40 mph or below.
• About 15% of the country’s speeding-related fatalities occur on interstate highways each year.
