Movie Filmed in Buffalo Nominated For Best Picture at the Oscars
For the longest time, it seems as if every movie was filmed and set in New York City. If it wasn't filmed in New York City, then a city such as Los Angeles or Chicago.
But lately, over the last several years, it seems like Buffalo has become a popular destination for movie makers in Hollywood.
You may remember when John Krasinski filmed A Quiet Place: Part II in Western New York, and there have been other sightings of film crews in Buffalo and the surrounding suburbs over the past two or three years.
One of the most recent was Guillermo del Toro's suspenseful drama, Nightmare Alley.
del Toro and actor Bradley Cooper were in Buffalo in early 2020 to film scenes for Nightmare Alley, and most famously in Niagara Square at Buffalo's City Hall.
Nightmare Alley was released to theaters in December, and tells the story of Stanton Carlisle (Cooper), who is hired as a carnival carny but soon makes his way to the city elite. The film also stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette and Willem Dafoe.
On Tuesday morning, the news came that Nightmare Alley was nominated for not one, but four Academy Awards at the 2022 Oscars, including Best Picture.
I watched Nightmare Alley last week, when it went to Hulu, and it was fantastic. You can definitely see why it took home so many award nominations. It might not have exploded at the Box Office (competing against Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix Reloaded had something to do with that), but you can see why it was made -- to be critically acclaimed.
It's also super cool that much of it was filmed in Buffalo.
