New York State has taken another step closer to raising the minimum age to buy cigarettes from 18 to 21.

A bill that would raise the age minimum took a big step forward after a Senate Health committee approved the measure.

Currently, both California and Hawaii have banned the sale of tobacco products to people under the age of 21. Also, New York City has a ban in place to restrict the sale of cigarettes to people under the age of 21.

New York Senator Diane Savino commented on the proposed bill:

"By raising the legal purchase age to 21, we will help prevent a generation of New Yorkers from becoming addicted to smoking and ultimately save thousands of lives,"
