Taking time to clear a hydrant of snow is a waste of their precious time so firefighters across the state are asking people to make sure they clear the snow and ice from around the hydrants on their property.

In fact, it is New York State law that if you have a hydrant on your property, it is your responsibility to make sure there is a clear path for firefighters to get to the hydrant.

According to the law, you need to clear out two feet around the outside of the fire hydrant within 24 hours of the end of the weather event that caused the snow or ice. If you don't remove the snow you could face fines as much as $150 for the first offense and as high as $350 for additional offenses.

So this winter do the right thing and as you clear your driveway and sidewalks, make sure to clear the fire hydrants as well.

Back in the day, the closest we came to snow tubing was hopping on a bent and dinged silver metal "saucer" and then throwing ourselves hurtling down a snowy (and rocky) hill. It was fun, but....ouch!
