According to WIVB, that new seat belt law goes into effect this Sunday, November 1st.

Anyone over the age of 16 will be required to wear a seat belt, no longer a choice to wear one.

“I don’t get to see a lot of the people who weren’t wearing seat belts in the back because they never make it to my trauma center…because they die,” said Kurt Edwards, the Chief of Trauma and Critical Care in the Department of Surgery at Albany Medical Center.

So, what happens if you're caught without a seat belt in the back seat after October 31st?

Those who are caught will be given a ticket for a maximum fine of $50.
