As of Sunday, a new law went into effect that all schools in NYS are required to teach mental health.

With so many people battling depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues, it is high time that we prepare our kids for the future. By emphasizing mental health literacy, schools can prepare students with lifelong skills to understand mental health and wellness. This will also increase mental health awareness of when and how to access treatment and support for themselves and others.

It has been just about 40 years since New York's education laws first called for teaching health matters in schools. This is a fantastic step in the right direction. NYS education laws have expanded over the years to recognize health concerns like alcohol, drug, tobacco abuse and prevention and detection of certain cancers.

What do you think about this in schools? I am an advocate of it. I feel kids should know about this for prevention purposes and to also seek the help if they need it.
