There has been a deficit in access to computers and broadband internet on Buffalo's east side for many years.

That deficit was exasperated by the COVID-19 pandemic and with public schools being closed, thousands of youth in Buffalo lost access to the primary place where they were able to access technology.

Now, thanks to a new initiative and partnership between local and state governments, a couple of non-profits, and a major telecom company, there is a new computer lab that's open to the public six days a week.

AT&T has partnered with the Buffalo Urban League and Dreamerscorp to open the new AT&T Digital Learning Lab at the Buffalo Urban League's Community Center at CRUCIAL, located at 230 Moselle St.

This computer lab features 30 state-of-the-art computers, various laptops and tablets, high-speed internet, and a 3D printer that is available for youth and adult use. The lab is open 6 days per week, year-round.

During the school year, the center is open as an after-school hub and is open all day during the school breaks and the summer months.

In addition to financial support, AT&T is offering the use of its digital learning software The Achievery for free.

This lab is a nice addition to the community center that has served the Genesee-Moselle area for many years. In addition to the learning lab, there is a newly refurbished gym, all sorts of space available to the community, and a video gaming center where kids can play all the current video games and enroll in an Esports program to learn professional gaming.

Buffalo and Erie County have been taking steps in the last few years to help close the digital divide that exists in Western New York.

This new center is available to the whole community and should go a long way to help close the gap.
