"Officer Shields died on Oct. 30, 2002 when his patrol car crashed into a tree as he and his partner, Officer Kimberly Monteforte, were chasing down a robbery call. Officer Monteforte survived." -WIVB

WIVB reports that every year on the anniversary of Shields' death, they visit a memorial near Delaware Avenue and Bryant Street, where the fatal crash occurred.

And when it was time to visit this year, Shields' sisters and mother noticed the memorial was missing. For 18 years it had been undisturbed at the intersection. .

"[Shields'] mother is devastated knowing the memorial is missing and not knowing what happened to it. The only thing left was a plaque that reads “If love could have saved you, you could have lived forever.” - WIVB

The Buffalo Police department is looking into the missing memorial, and the family is hoping someone who knows something comes forward.
