Buffalo Sabres Sign Player to Shocking New Massive Contract

The Buffalo Bills are at the top of every Buffalo sports fans' mind right now, but the Buffalo Sabres will have their 2022-2023 regular season opener tomorrow night.

The Sabres will host the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night at KeyBank Center, which is the start of a season that fans for once are optimistic about.

The Sabres are not favored to make the playoffs but they should improve from last season, with 2023-2024 being the season fans are expecting the team's first playoff berth since 2011.

The roster is the youngest in the entire NHL and stacked with potential stars and players who have already proven to be stars, like Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin.

On Wednesday, the Sabres were very busy, as they signed their head coach and a young player to contract extensions.

First, Buffalo signed head coach Don Granato to a new contract extension, which Pierre LeBrun reports is a two-year extension, which means Granato is signed for three more seasons after this one.

Just minutes after the Granato news, the Sabres announced they have signed defenseman Mattias Samuelsson to a 7-year contract worth $30 million.

Samuelsson has only played 54 career NHL games and has scored zero goals with 12 assists. The 22-year-old, American-born defenseman was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by Buffalo.

Samuelsson's new contract is nothing short of shocking. It's extremely rare for a player with his pedigree to get a seven-year extension like this.

However, he is exactly what the Sabres want right now. He's perfect for Rasmus Dahlin, since Samuelsson is a stay-at-home defenseman who allows Dahlin to pinch and play up in the offense.

Samuelsson is calm and colleected whenever he's in his own zone and is a throwback to a '90s or early 2000s NHL defenseman.
