This week means time off from school for most Buffalo area kids...but how to keep them occupied has parents wondering and maybe causing unnecessary stress.

News 4 (WIVB-TV) interviewed Dr. Wendy Paterson, Dean of Education at Buffalo State, about things that parents can do with their kids.

She suggests to stay away from the computer, especially since kids learning this year has been computer-heavy.

If using the computer Dr. Paterson says to make sure it's for fun things like scavenger hunts or other imaginative things or substitute screen-time for page-time.

“Find a great story or a story that has a series like the harry potter series. Put up some comfy pillows, make a reading corner. Do something that children can seek out and enjoy and you can read with them.”

Dr. Paterson says even though they’ll be home, kids should get plenty of free time and parents should keep time less structured, so it is not reminiscent of school.

Here are some other things kids might find fun:

Turn your home into a spa with mini mani/pedis for all.

Check Pinterest for project ideas.

See what tall tales your local library has to offer.

Grab that camera and let your mini models show off their stuff.

Pop some popcorn and enjoy family movie night.

Check local museums some have discount programs during school vacations.

Do a puzzle. Start with the edges first and together the family can create a masterpiece.

Make your own pizza or taco night.

Head outside for a walk and explore.
