Its been just over a year for ten year old Gavin Burns, the Lewiston boy who fought to survive and recover after suffering a tragic injury in a lawnmower accident.

Gavin's foot had to be amputated, he has been through from six surgeries, and throughout the ordeal Gavin's Dad, Jason Burns says "the Lewiston community has been phenomenal."

Jason and wife Jackie Burns neighbor Theresa Jo Belkota knew to put pressure on Gavin's femoral artery to control the bleeding and save his leg - thanks to watching something similar done on a popular TV show.

Monday was Gavin's "Moving Up Day" and was surprised in the school auditorium when he was presented with the NYS Attorney General's Triple C Award, for his "strength of character" making him a "role model for other students".

Gavin's Mom and Dad said "even with the year's ups and downs it's incredible to see his (Gavin's) smile still light up a room and inspire so many."

Congratulations Gavin, we all share in the pride your Mom, Dad, relatives and the community have for you.

Note:  Gavin, his parents Jason and Jackie Burns, and his brothers, Jason and James are personal friends of mine, and it is a pleasure to recognize them in this post.
