When you hear the word castle, you instantly think Europe, but New York is home to several castles that will make your mouth drop. Some of these are a bit of a drive, but they are all in New York!

Boldt Castle

Boldt Castle is located on Hart Island in the Thousand Islands-Seaway region. The castle has 120 rooms and was built at the turn-of-the 20th century. Millionaire hotel magnate George C. Boldt commissioned the construction of Boldt Castle as a tribute to his beloved wife, Louise.

Singer Castle

Singer Castle is a Scottish-inspired castle located on a seven-acre island in the St. Lawrence River. This castle has 28 rooms, a clock tower, a boat house and rose garden. Plus in true castle fashion it is full of hidden passageways. It was built between 1900 and 1905 by millionaire Frederick Gilbert Bourne, CEO of the Singer Sewing Machine Company.

Those are the closest castles to Buffalo, NY, but they are NOT the only castles in New York state. In the Hudson Valley is Lyndhurst, which is a Gothic revival mansion sitting on 67 acres along the Hudson Rivers. It was built in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis for William Paulding, a former NYC mayor.

Castle Williams is located on Governor's Island near NYC. This castle was designed between 1807 and 1811.

Olana State Historic Site is located in Hudson, NY, and was the home of Frederic Church, a landscape painter of the Hudson River School. It sits on 250 acres and hosts some of Church's art.
