It was a sad day for parishioners this past Tuesday of Sacred Heart Church  on Genesee St in Bowmansville.

Below are photos of a large truck that slammed the stone while trying to make it underneath the historic arch at Sacred Heart.

Truck Destroys Sacred Heart Arch

I was speaking with some of the parishioners that I know who have been a part of that church since they were born. It was upsetting for them because the arch represents so much that they have seen and done throughout their lives at the church. From baptisms, to first communion‘s and weddings, Sacred Heart Church is a landmark for residence in the Bowmansville area.

According to the Facebook page, Sacred Heart has been able to save some of the statues surrounding the Archway and will continue to work on removing the pieces that they can salvage.

I grew up in East Aurora and there was a time when the viaduct on Main Street near Reilly Street was not wide enough for large trucks to fit through. Police used to have to block off portions of the road while the trucks were removed from underneath the bridge. In many cases, they would have to lower the tire pressure on the truck and trailer to either pull it backward or move it forward through the viaduct.

Cleanup and renovation crews will be back at Sacred Heart on Wednesday morning to continue to keep the Archway as intact as possible until they can figure out a plan to rebuild.
