Today, we remember one of the most shocking storylines that has ever happened on the Buffalo Bills - the day a player quit...in the middle of the game.

We are just 22 days away from Buffalo Bills regular season football again.  Leading up to the opening game, we'll be counting down by featuring former and current players.

There are plenty of directions we can go when we talk about the number 22.  Of course Fred Jackson is one of Buffalo's favorite players to ever wear that number.  He was the underdog running back from Coe college who worked his way into our hearts.

Reggie Bush wore #22 when he was a Buffalo Bill.  He was the second overall draft pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.  Teams were tanking just to get the opportunity to pick him.  Buffalo got him a couple years later and he was a non-factor on the field that year.  As a matter of fact, he probably had the worst stats of his career in Buffalo.  He finished with just seven catches for 90 yards, and 12 carries for −3 yards and a rushing touchdown.  Negative 3 yards!!

TJ Yeldon and Matt Breida both wore 22 for the Bills.  But the player with the most shocking story of all was #22 Vontae Davis.

Davis was a Pro-Bowl cornerback.  The Bills were thrilled to get him.  After playing 4 seasons with the Dolphins and another 5 in Indianapolis, the Bills thought they knew what they had in Davis - A professional all-pro player who was coming in to help the Bills get some wins.

What they got instead was someone who quit on them.

On September 16, 2018, the Buffalo Bills were taking on the San Diego Chargers and losing pretty badly by halftime.  They were down 28-6 when Davis simply walked to the locker room, took off his pads and jersey and walked out.

He quit the Bills, and he quit football.

People thought he was having a breakdown and were concerned for him.  But he said it was liberating.  He was just done with meetings and schedules and orders from coaches and wanted to live life with his family.

No one can argue with a desire to change your life path.  No one can argue about wanting to spend more time with family.  But the way that he went about it sucked for his team.  They were counting on him and he completely let them down.  You have to finish what you start.

It was without a doubt, one of the most shocking storylines to ever come from an NFL player.
