Usually, around this time Lake Erie is frozen, and the chance of lake effect snow drops. lake effect snow happens when cold weather moves across warmer lake water and can dump inches if not feet of snow over a quick time frame.
The good news is that WGRZ meteorologist Patrick Hammer doesn't think that a cold front will move across the lakes this month. According to his Tweet, we could see some lake-effect snow in February.
It has been snowy once so far this winter season. The City of Buffalo has already surpassed 100 inches of snow. 2022 turned out to be the snowiest on record for Western New York.
Hopefully, the lake temperatures will continue to drop and reduce the chance of lake-effect snowstorms.
