It seems that a tragic vehicle accident that is related to car thefts and a social media challenge is causing police officials and automobile manufacturers to look to the past as a way to prevent additional thefts and loss of life.

A few weeks ago Kia released a statement regarding the crash that took 4 lives in Buffalo and the larger Kia Challenge phenomenon that has circulated on social media sites like TikTok that has driven up car thefts all over the country. In that statement, officials from the car company said they would start sending out steering wheel locks to police departments all over the country.

Those wheel locks have begun arriving in Western New York and police departments are starting to distribute them to Kia and Hyundai car owners.

Those wheel locks are the same type and style of locks that used to be super popular in the 1990s when it seemed like everyone had a The Club attached to their steering wheel.

Do You Remember The Club?

Originally created in the late 1980s, The Club was invested by James Winner, Jr. and his company Winner International. He got the idea for The Club when thinking about his experiences from the Korean War where he had to secure his military vehicle with metal chains.

The Club became a very popular car anti-theft device and was used in vehicles all over the country. It also spawned all sorts of other steering wheel lock devices.

Kia Hopes To Reduce Thefts With The Steering Wheel Lock

Kia America and Hyundai Motor America are making the steering wheel locks available at no cost to Kia and Hyundai owners who feel they may need them. You can either contact your local police department to inquire about the locks or contact Kia at 800-333-4542.
