New York State Banned Stores From Providing Plastic Bags

On March 1, 2020, the law went into effect that banned most stores around New york State from giving plastic bags out to customers. The law says, in part,

No person required to collect tax shall distribute any plastic carryout bags to its customers.

It was quite an adjustment at first, but I think most of us have gotten used to paper bags or using our own reusable bags. Some stores make you buy a brown bag if you want one. I will say that while I completely understand the environmental reasons behind the plastic bag ban, paper bags are a pain in the you-know-what. I find that they are often made super thin and cheap and frequently break. And there's really no way to carry all of your paper bags from a day of shopping into the house in one trip like we used to do with plastic bags. I have dropped many items trying it.

When Will Walmart Stop Offering Brown Paper Bags?

According to a recent Facebook post from Walmart Olean, Walmart's brown paper bags will be going away soon,

Starting 1/18/23 Our New York stores will be going bagless. A large variety of reusable bags will be available for purchase in store.

If you're a Walmart shopper, put your reusable bags in your trunk now so you don't forget them come January 18.
