Wegmans Recalls Popular Pasta Sauce

Wegmans recently announced a recall of their Italian Classics Diavolo Pasta Sauce, which is sold in dozens of their stores across the northeast, including Western New York.

The Diavolo sauce, a “zesty sauce with cuts of tomatoes & the spicy flavor of red hot pepper” as described by Wegmans,  is sold under their in-house label. It’s a favorite of shoppers who love the flavor and its low price tag (usually selling for under $3 in most stores).

Why Is Wegmans Recalling Their Diavolo Pasta Sauce?

Wegmans warns its customers that a recent batch of the Diavolo sauce could possibly contain an undeclared anchovy allergen.

If you aren’t allergic to anchovies, you should theoretically be fine - but if you are, the consequences could be severe.

If you’re allergic to shellfish, there’s a high possibility you could have a reaction to anchovies as well. However, an anchovy allergy can be difficult to deal with, because they can unexpectedly be an ingredient in many common condiments, like bloody mary mix, caesar dressing, and, yes, pasta sauce.

Allergic reactions to anchovies can vary in severity, the most common reactions being hives, an itchy mouth, vomiting, or diarrhea.

However, severe symptoms such as trouble breathing and/or a drop in blood pressure can happen when someone who is allergic ingests anchovies.
