It’s ‘716 DAY’… Activities To Check Out Around WNY

"716"...it's just an area code, right?  Not here in Western New York, it's not!

It's a day to celebrate all things that are special to Western New York and the Niagara Frontier from the Harborfront to Niagara Falls...Highmark Stadium to Sahlen Field.

It's a day to realize what makes us unique and why people treasure living here or coming back to visit.

Former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra described "716" in an interview with WKBW-TV when Buffalo and Rochester were fighting over the area code this way.

"That branding became very important to this community and we didn't want to lose that identity because we had begun to see some momentum as we were shifting from a manufacturing economy to a more retail-based service economy."

There is really nothing that rivals the "716", especially when you ask people who have left the area.  It's the smell of Cheerios early in the morning downtown; it's the mist rolling off Niagara Falls; it's all the different foods at the Erie County Fair or the thunderous applause and cheering at a Bills game.

It's people that are willing to help you out when a lake effect snowstorm has you stuck on Delaware Avenue downtown or the person delivering the daily mail just stopping to ask how you are doing.  Maybe these things happen in different parts of the country, but not in the same way they happen in Western New York.
