Access to the internet is extremely important for anyone right now, especially school students and also for those parents that are working from home. One of the biggest issues for many families in areas where internet service isn't available is the cost to have the service for their homes.

The Federal Communications Commission just recently announced that it has approved funds to provide internet subsidies for low-income families. The program is called Emergency Broadband Benefit Program. This new program will provide families discounts of up to $50 per month for broadband service, it will also give up to a $100 one-time discount for a computer or a tablet for eligible households.

The people that would be eligible for this program are people that are lifeline subscribers also those who are on Medicaid or accept SNAP benefits. Families with children who receive free or reduced lunch will also be eligible for the program as well.

This program will help those at risk of digital disconnection. It will help those sitting in cars in parking lots just to catch a Wi-Fi signal to go online for work. It will help those lingering outside the library with a laptop to get a wireless signal for remote learning.

This new program is expected to begin soon, families that would like to apply or if you would like more information, you can click here. I remember stories from friends of mine when virtual learning was first announced, explaining to me that getting internet service is going to be a big problem for them. I'm excited to hear of this new program that will help many residents of our community.
