Intermission is OVER for Buffalo’s Most Famous Theatre
The intermission is finally over.
Shea's Performing Arts Center has announced new dates for its M&T Bank Broadway Series.
According to WGRZ shows will return in September.
And, at 100 percent capacity.
Disney's Frozen will kick off the M&T Bank Broadway series on September 10 -- the show's tour was originally scheduled for 2020-2021.
In fact, all of the previously announced touring shows will reschedule -- "including Hamilton from December 14th, 2021 - January 2nd, 2022, Oklahoma! from February 15 - 20th, 2022, and My Fair Lady from March 1st - 6th, 2022," according to WGRZ.
Three postponed shows from the 2019-2020 M&T Bank Broadway series, The Band's Visit, Escape to Margaritaville, and Anastasia, also have new dates in that time period, meaning Shea's thousands of season ticket subscribers will be in for a lot of live theater in a short period of time.
The theatre has been shut down since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.
Governor Cuomo announced venues could reopen at one-third capacity earlier this month, making theatre-goers excited for the possibility of going back to Buffalo's bit of Broadway at Shea's.
But a message sent to season ticket holders explaining the situation put a pause on early celebration:
“We look forward to being able to welcome theatergoers back to Shea’s as soon as it is safe for everyone and is practical. Touring shows need to play to 80 to 90 percent capacity in order to make it economically feasible to tour to Buffalo and across the country. With the costs of the producing, including cast and crew, travel accommodations, as well as local workers such as musicians, stagehands, and more, the overall cost of live theatre is expensive.”
The theatre is planning for 100 percent capacity.
