Now that WNY winter is over....it's time for the rainy days of spring to set in, keeping your kids cooped up indoors, and bringing the inevitable "I'M BORED!" chants through your house.

You know what they say about idle hands....here's one really cool, easy, and CHEAP project to keep them busy, at least for a few minutes!

The homemade lava lamp.  I did this with Brandon's 9-year-old son Ryan, and for a little guy who's not quite into "science" yet, he was really thrilled with it.

What you'll need:

  • empty plastic pop bottles (any size...)
  • vegetable oil
  • food coloring
  • Alka Seltzer tablets (generic is fine)

Remove the labels from the bottles, and fill each one about 2/3 of the way with water.

Slowly add about 1/6 oil on top of the water (you want at least a couple inches from the top of the liquid to the top of the bottle, just in case there's some spillage).  Patiently wait (about 2 min) for the oil and water to separate.  The oil will be on top.

Drop in 1/2 - 3/4 of Alka Seltzer tablet.

Bubbles from the tablet interacting with the water will start to rise, with food coloring, and will mix with the oil on top, giving it a cool Lava-Lamp look!
