Falling in line with the weirdness of 2020, a strong solar storm has made it possible to see the Northern Lights as far south (globally) as Western New York.

East Aurora looks to be in a great position for viewing the Northern Lights, according to WGRZ meteorologist Patrick Hammer.

The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued G1, G2, and G3 geomagnetic storm watches for tonight. The watch levels are based on how much solar activity is hitting the Earth's atmosphere.

Thrillist explains:

"That solar energy can result in the beautiful auroral displays visible at both of the Earth's poles. When an especially strong burst of solar energy from a coronal mass ejection (CME) arrives, that can make the aurora borealis visible in areas where it doesn't appear with much frequency. You know, like much of the US."

It's never a guarantee to see the Northern Lights in our neck of the woods, even when solar storms and atmospheric conditions align. Cloud cover and light pollution can impact your ability to see the phenomenon in the night sky.

Your best bet is to head somewhere dark, really dark.

Folks in more rural areas with higher elevation will be in the best position to see auroras. Ironically, East Aurora is home to one of my favorite open-to-the-public stargazing spots, the Mill Road Scenic Overlook.
