There was a study that said you should have a stranger or someone else pick out your profile picture, which is kind of weird because wouldn't you think that you'd pick the best pic of yourself. There was a big study done with students and here's what they found:

When researchers showed the pictures students had chosen to random internet strangers, the strangers found that the photos picked by others (not the student themselves) were more attractive, trustworthy, dominant, confident or competent, depending on which site they were meant for", according to Mashable.com.
