The Western New York Regional office of the American Red Cross is hosting a major volunteer service event on Saturday, May 7, 2022, throughout the Buffalo area.

Sound The Alarm is a national campaign by the American Red Cross to install more than 50,000 smoke alarms across the nation. In the Buffalo area, the local chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to go help install free smoke alarms and share safety information throughout communities that are at-risk, and help raise funds to help families prepare for, respond to and recover from home fires.

In addition to volunteers, they looking for families and homes that are in need of smoke detectors. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death and injury due to fire, almost 3 out of five fire deaths occurred in homes that did not have a working smoke alarm.

Data that has been made available by FEMA show that more than 60 New Yorkers have died so far in fires this year alone. As someone who has survived a house fire, and had another one of his buildings burn down in a fire, it was only because of the fire alarms that helped everyone get out safely.

Please don't ignore this opportunity to increase the safety of your home, or to help someone who is in need.
