COVID-19 has been making a resurgence in various parts of the United States and it appears that we in New York are not exempt from the increase in coronavirus infections.

According to a report by WKBW-TV, it looks like Erie County is very close to being designed as a community that has a High Risk of Community Transmission by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This designation by the CDC is the highest level of COVID-19 infection that a community can reach on the measurement scale that is used and is defined as having more than 100 total new cases per 100,000 persons in the past 7 calendar days. Based on a tweet that was sent by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, Erie County has had 95 new cases in the last 7 days and this puts us right on the doorstep of the designation

This isn't surprising considering that COVID-19 deaths in New York have increased four-fold since August 1st and some New York zip codes have some of the highest COVID-19 infection rates in the nation.

Officials from Erie County have not announced any plans to reimplement any new mask requirements or other restrictions if the county does become a high transmission risk community, but members of the Erie County Health Department urge everyone to wear a mask to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
