With Disney working their way down their list of animated classics they can remake in live-action format they are rapidly approaching the point where they will run out of movies to adapt. In fact, one of their big upcoming projects is a movie they’ve already turned from cartoon to live-action once before: 101 Dalmatians, which they transformed from a 1961 animated feature into the 1996 romp starring Glenn Close as the wicked Cruella de Vil.

23 years later, Disney is currently prepping a projected called CruellaIt was originally scheduled to come out in 2020, but has now been pushed back to the summer of 2021. More, from Variety:

“Cruella,” starring Emma Stone, is based on the classic “101 Dalmatians” villain Cruella de Vil. The revisit to Disney’s animated classic was originally set to hit theaters Dec. 23, 2020, but will now debut on May 28, 2021. “I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie directed the movie, which also features Emma Stone in the title role and Joel Fry.

The December 23, 2020 release date would have conflicted with Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, which is due on December 18, and which is being produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox, which is now owned by Disney, which means the company would have been competing with itself if it had stuck to both original release dates. (And you don’t ask Steven Spielberg to move out of a prime awards season release date, I guess.) So Cruella is now a summer 2021 movie.
