KXAN-TV Reports that Austin-Travis County EMS Captain R. Luddy happened to be eating lunch at the location where the dog reportedly fell prior to starting a training exercise.

When he heard the dog’s owner yell for help Luddy instinctively jumped into action, rappelling down the side of the cliff.

“I honestly didn’t think I was going to be able to do much for the dog. I thought I was going to be able to get this gentleman’s dog’s body back, so he didn’t have to go home empty handed,” Luddy said.

Luddy found Stout in fairly good shape and walked him back to his owner. Luddy says that the ledges on the cliff,  that are studded with branches and bushes helped to break the animals fall.

Luddy surmises the reason Stout fell off the cliff is that his owner didn't have the dog leashed. He’s warning dog owners to be especially careful when walking with pets in high or wooded areas, to prevent similar occurrences.
