A 12-year-old boy is in the hospital after being hit by a car, while crossing Route 62 on his scooter in Eden.

The roads were virtually shut down for hours as police tried to reconstruct the accident, which cracked the windshield of the vehicle that struck the child.

The 12-year-old was airlifted to Women and Children's Hospital with a serious head injury.

The driver, who has been identified as a female, told police that she was looking at her GPS when she struck the boy. There is no word yet as to whether she will face distracted driving charges, but the investigation will continue taking into account the driver's speed.
